Located 60 km away from Palma, Portocolom is one of the most picturesque parts of Mallorca, with its fishing port, charming corners and lighthouse dating back to 1860. The coast of Felanitx has several unspoilt and heavenly coves of exceptional beauty. The largest of them is Cala d’en Marçal, which has been awarded a Blue Flag and is surrounded by cliffs and all sorts of services. It is mostly frequented by guests staying in the nearby hotels, including JS Portocolom Suites, JS Cape Colom and Hostal San Francisco.
Some other beaches well worth visiting are Cala S’Arenal, which is near the lighthouse and comprises two beaches hidden under a lush forest cover; Cala Sa Nau, surrounded by innumerable white and red cliffs crowned with pine and juniper groves, ideal for snorkelling; and Baños de Cleo, made up of several natural rocky coves with crystal-clear waters amid breath-taking natural surroundings.
Portocolom’s location makes its coves, beaches and natural spaces ideal for all sorts of activities. For those who want to practise a more active kind of tourism, Portocolom has several trails beginning at the local lighthouse, on the north-eastern tip of the bay, one of the most characteristic and photographed sites on the island of Mallorca. Its charming and beautiful trails include the one of Cala Sa Nau, where you can enjoy a nice spot of scuba diving, or of Cala Murada, which takes you through S’Algar and along paths with abundant greenery, such as the one of Sant Salvador, a highly recommendable excursion for its architectural beauty and wonderful views. All these places are perfect for enjoying the most spectacular views in the area.
Golf is a very popular sport in and around Portocolom because of the area’s perfect weather and many high-quality courses, the nearest of which is Vall d’Or Golf, with 18 holes, which is only 4 km away. Mallorca is also one of Europe’s windiest capitals. For more than 30 years, windsurfing experts have flocked to the island because of its perfect conditions for practising this sport. Not a day goes by without at least a gentle breeze blowing through the coves of Portocolom, meaning there are no unexpected surprises while practising this or any other sport, including sailing and kitesurfing.
The town also has several scuba diving centres and it is well-known for the beauty of its sea-beds, cliffs and underwater caves.
Cycling is another understandably popular activity in Mallorca, as its road network extends along 1,250 km, 675 of which are local and secondary roads with an average width of 6.5 m. 20% of the island’s roads are on mountains.
Portocolom is a town with long-standing fishing and trading traditions. In its port area (one of Mallorca’s few natural harbours) you can contemplate traditional fishing boats called llauts and also visit El Riuetó, a jetty with colourful fishermen’s village houses. The Portocolom lighthouse, on the north-eastern tip of the bay, is yet another iconic site, as are the Santueri Castle, on the Levante mountain range, and the neo-Gothic church of Mare de Déu del Carme, on Plaça Sant Jaume.
Near our hotels is a trail we recommend you explore the Route of the Monasteries, which takes you from Son Negre all the way to the monastery of Monti-sion. Along the way you will walk by four 14th-century monasteries: The Cura Sanctuary, the Bonany Sanctuary, the Santa Lucía Hermitage and the Sant Salvador Sanctuary. And if you are interested in archaeology, make sure to visit Closos de Can Gaià, a site with nine naviform structures dating back to the Bronze Age. These are the most common type of construction from this age found in Mallorca and Menorca.
